Celebrating Thoreau at 200

Three Chairs Publishing is celebrating what would have been Henry David Thoreau’s 200th birthday this week with a few posts about the man who inspired our name with his quote: “I had three chairs in my house; one for solitude, two for friendship, three for society.”

Today, Larry Buell, Harvard’s Powell M. Cabot Research Professor of American Literature emeritus, reflects on the lasting relevance of the author’s ode to nature and simple living. More than 150 years after it was first published, Walden, said Buell, still resonates.
